About Summer
Hi, I’m Summer LaBelle—a Super 8 filmmaker based in Charleston, SC. My journey into filmmaking has been anything but conventional. I’ve always been drawn to beauty in its simplest forms—the golden hues of sunrise, the soft stillness of dawn, the way a shared meal lingers in candlelight. There’s something special about the fleeting nature of these moments, and I’ve always wanted to find a way to hold onto them.
In 2020, I left my job as a Video Producer and took a leap, moving to Maui, Hawaii, without a plan or a single connection. I spent my days embracing the island’s rhythm—surfing, exploring, and learning to live more slowly and intentionally. While assisting a friend on her elopements, she handed me a newly purchased Super 8 camera, and asked if I wanted to figure out how to use it. From the moment I started shooting on the vintage medium, something clicked and I quickly fell in love with Super 8.
Super 8 is more than just a medium to me—it’s a way of seeing. In a world that moves so fast, film forces you to slow down. You don’t get unlimited takes or instant playback. Every frame is intentional, every roll holds a sense of anticipation. The grain, the flicker, the imperfect beauty—it captures not just how a moment looks, but how it feels. That’s what I love most.
Since starting my business in 2022, I’ve had the chance to document love stories, unforgettable landscapes, and deeply personal moments, all through the timeless lens of film. Now based in Charleston, I’m excited to be part of a growing movement bringing analog storytelling back to life. If you’re drawn to nostalgia, to the magic of the in-between, to preserving memories in their truest form—I’d love to capture that for you.
Where can you find me when I’m not filming?
Usually, surfing! I learned to surf when I moved to Hawaii in 2020. I immediately fell in love with the sport, and haven’t stopped since! Surfing is my favorite way to connect with God and nature. Spending time in the water, you can’t help but feel at peace.
